I always tought that " little wing " refered to she, rather than he and was written about his mother, Jay Jay
One of my most favorite songs .

Hi Mac, yes you are quite correct, I changed all the lyrics from she to he
It's mainly the feel & ambience of this song especially the SRV version, that makes me think of Rory. I don't know why?

Apologies Jimi and family for changing his lyrics

Well, a little poetic license is assumed anyway for this- I never saw Rory as a bit of a tramp, either (Highway Chile) but he did seem a little like a gypsy, or a wanderer.

Just as IMO the old Marty Robbins tune, El Paso was an excellent metaphor for Walter's journey in Breaking Bad, the overall flavor of the songs is what might bring Rory to mind. Just as I doubt on a rational level that Rory's Strat could really cry for him, I can feel that, once Joe B. gets out of its way and plays Gary's Blues, it may be crying for its true master, it is fair to say, it brought Rory to mind.

So- I choose,

Okay, it's my choice, and look, I was nineteen when I first saw him on stage- an old man of 25!

IMHO, many of Rory's songs were at least, in part, self-revelatory. Some of that, again, IMHO was unintentional, he was by all accounts a very private person. But isn't that what makes for good art? When the artist leaves something of himself in his work?

Anyway, seems kind of counter-intuitive, to include Rory's own songs, but this one is all about the man himself- and it's beautiful besides. . .

I think it had to be released posthumously because it was so personal, more revealing than he was comfortable with.

When I was in Cork in 2012 I went into this Irish Store to buy an Irish T Shirt for my brother. They were playing this song by Patrick O'Sullivan and he is a traditional Irish signer. One of the titles of his song is called "I So Glad I Had The Chance". What was weird it sounded like RG's life. I cannot find the lyrics anywhere so I am going to order this CD with the song on it and write it down word for word for this forum. Its an interesting song. Subrata. x

This is a melancholic song from an spanish rock singer, who as Rory has been touring most of his life, and while hearing the other day made me remember Rory.
As it's sung in spanish I tried to tranlate it, I dont't know if I', successfull enough but it's a try to approach you the meaning of the lyrics
Among the musicians playing piano and flute is Thijs Van Leer from Focus, Hope you like it

El BLUES DEL AUTOBUS

Cada día despierto
en distinta habitación
donde doy con mis huesos
cuando está naciendo el sol,
dormimos poco y mal
quemando la salud
para llegar al quinto infierno
donde cantaré de nuevo
¿qué estarás haciendo tú?

Cada dia un concierto
un ensayo una tensión
que controlo sabiendo
que es mi vida lo que doy,
no hay trampa ni cartón
soy como veis que soy
sé más por perro que por viejo
pero empiezo a echar de menos
un minuto entre tu y yo...

CORO:
Vivo en la carretera
dentro de un autobús
vivo en la carretera
aparcado en un blues
vivo en la carretera
siempre miro hacia el sur
vivo en la carretera
el blues del autobús...

Si pudieramos parar un minuto mas
necesito telefonear
Si pudieramos dormir unas horas mas
antes de empezar a tocar.

Cierto, que el equipo aquel nunca suena igual
¿ Que misterio habra ?
Si podemos conectar lo demas
se puede olvidar...

CORO:
Vivo en la carretera
dentro de un autobús
vivo en la carretera
aparcado en un blues
vivo en la carretera
siempre miro hacia el sur
vivo en la carretera
el blues del autobús.

Translation :)

Each day I wake up
in a different room
throwing there my bones
when the sun is born,
sleeping little and bad
burning our health
to reach the middle of nowhere
where I’ll sing again
What will be doing you?

Each day a new gig
a rehearsal an stress
which I control knowing
that’s my life what I give
there’s no trap neither carboard
I am what you see I’m
I know more due to my dog life than coz I’m old
but I’m beginning to miss
a minute between you and I

CHORUS ;
I live on the road
inside a bus
I live on the road
parked in a blues
I live on the road
always looking at the south
I live on the road
the blues bus

If we could stop for a minute more
I need to make a telephone call
If we could sleep a few hours more
Before start playing

Truly the equipment never sounds the same
What mistery there will be?
If we could connect the rest
you can forget

CHORUS ;
I live on the road
inside a bus
I live on the road
parked in a blues
I live on the road
always looking at the south
I live on the road
the blues bus

I heard this one today- A Friend of A Friend- not much to it, it was written by Dave Grohl about his friend.

The words don't exactly fit, but the flavor and the sentiment of the song remind me of Rory. To me he is a friend I never met.

I came across this one- was a hit in 1961- and I thought about Rory as the wandering musician, but then, I also thought, he must have heard this one on the radio when he was, what, 12? 13 years old? Rick Nelson was popular among American young people, and I bet it was played on the U.S. military stations he used to listen to, I imagine he probably sang along with this one when he heard it, maybe it fired his imagination, helped spur him on to be the wandering troubadour he would later become, fuel to the fire within, so to speak-

So, I add Travelin' Man by Ricky Nelson-
