13/01/79 Hammersmith Odeon – I was there, my one and only Rory gig.
I had seen the Irish Tour film a few years earlier and had bought the album too but that was it, my boyfriend bought us tickets to see Rory and I wasn’t sure I wanted to make the journey from Swindon to London and back by train but we did and I’m so glad we did.
I have three clear memories – the first is walking into the Odeon to go to our seats and being overwhelmed by the noise and testosterone levels! The second is seeing Rory bounce onto the stage in that way he had, wearing the orangey checked shirt. The third is seeing Rory come to the front of the stage at the end, dripping with sweat and saying thank you to everyone.
I didn’t know most of the songs but I remembered one in particular afterwards and had picked up on one word from it so I went to my local record store the next day and searched through Rory’s albums until I found it. There it was – Shinkicker – so I bought Photofinish (on vinyl) and loved it all.
Thank you so much Rory.
