Taste .. How Much Film Footage?

Postby Jay Jay » 31 Aug 2010, 20:58

I know Donal & Daniel have answered about Taste IOW recently Live DVD but ..

Isn't there enough footage out there for another "TASTE LIVE DVD"? Did they not film in Montreux when Taste played there in 1970?
What a about the footage when Taste played at the Cream farewell concert, filmed by Tony Palmer?
Anybody, do you know of anymore full footage of Taste in concert?

In less than 2 months time it will be the 40th aniversary of the last true Taste Concert in Belfast ..
It would have been nice to have had a Live Taste DVD out, to commemorate this landmark in Rory History :)

regarding the Taste Montreux footage: all that is known is that it existed. sadly the only copy of the material is believed to have been destroyed when a water pipe burst and flooded the archive it was stored at. i'm not sure where i got that from, i think it was officially confirmed by Claude Nobs, the festival founder.
as far as is known, the BBC footage from the "Late Night Line-UP"tv show and the Taste farewell at Belfast's Queen's University has been wiped for a re-use of the tapes. nevertheless, there was someone on the old "Meeting Place" that claimed to possess copies of the material. also rumour has it that this footage has been shown at one of the annual Ballyshannon meetings to a small audience. nothing more is known, i think.

regaring the Tony Palmer Cream farewell footage - that's a good question, i don't know anything about that.

I can add that Tony Palmer had fallen out with the bbc over a number of things . I was hoping to interview him and ask him about this film.

I am sure he has something but wether he would release it is another thing one for Donal and co here.....

Not surprissed about the BBC tape wiping........ standard policy in those days I am afraid.....

There was a rumour that the tapes were in a 'skip' and retrived by an engineer.....

All the material has been sent to the new BBC archives and is safe and in a controlled enviroment.

You could make a request to let them let you know of this , you may have to pay.

I did get this and send it to a number of people a few years ago, I it is on my old computer that blew up so if anyone has it please send it back as a favour and I will post it again to anyone who wants it.

are you referring to the bbc infax excerpt? i still have that one and i think there's no earlier material in it than the 1973 OGWT footage. i can mail it to you again, though.

by the way, what are you referring to by "the material has been sent to the new BBC archives and is safe and in a controlled enviroment "? are you talking about the lost (?) Taste footage (LNL-U, "An Evening with The Taste" and the farewell show)? has that actually been returned to the bbc arcchive?

All the best

Thanks Lars.
That would be great if you could email me the list..... (that is the list from the bbc archives as was at the time).

That list had everything on it at the time that the bbc had in it's vault/storrage facility which I think was at Windmill road.

The BBC moved all its tapes/recordings to a new premises earlier this year, which is where all programmes of radio and tv are storred. This is a purpose built facility as obviously material that is storred here is both valuable and a source of cultural interest world wide.

Helen Hayes is the director of this......... I left the BBC full time in April of this year.
The three tracks I was sent are from 73, little else is known......all the recording states is that it was recorded in 73, and that it was the great Rory Gallagher who sold over 30 million records...... which went out on 6 music a few days ago.....(As I was always trying to persuade people to play Rory at the bbc, I think most people knew that I was quite a fan of him, and kindly sent me this)

I stumbled across this old thread today and I suddenly remembered that I read something about a man called Bob Pratt a couple of weeks ago. Bob Pratt was a BBC employee in the late 60s/early 70s and a dedicated lover of rock music. He is believed to have rescued a lot of music related BBC footage from wiping, including some Hendrix stuff. I understand Bob Pratt is not alive anymore and I dont know to what extend the footage he saved has been returned to the BBC by now. I think I read somewhere else that the BBC acquired his archive but have not finished logging each item.

you can read more about Bob Pratt here:

a list of what the bbc has in it's vaults.
Seems the first material is for radio on the 8/5/1968 London BBC studios Top gear
2/19/1969 again bbc studios at the World service R and B
7/8/1969 London Symonds on Sunday
and an unspecified month in 1970 but ton the 16 The Harding radio show.
That is in regards to taste......
I got this list in 2007 from the archives at the bbc, before they moved there material to Windmill road.
wether any turned up subsequently , well who knows?
There seems to be NO recorded film of Rory in Taste at least catalogued.

Hope this helps
