Where to start

I had heard about him in the past, but mostly playing electric guitar. Came across him playing acoustic on YouTube and WHAM! Instant fan! This dude is as good as anyone I've ever heard and sings better than most. So my question to the esteemed veteran members of the board - what album/disc should I get to start my collection of him playing acoustic? Is there a 'best of' with all / mostly acoustic, especially with him playing slide? Thanks in advance for any and all advice...

Welcome SoCalLimoguy,

Rory's acoustic work was generally spread across all his released albums. But this YouTube grouping has a nice sampling of his acoustic prowess (Me and My Music):

and this one:

IMO, the best part of a Rory concert was his acoustic set. 8-)

Wheels Within Wheels is a pretty good place to start.

Hi ..Moguy and a very warm welcome to the forum and to Roryworld :)

Yes as above with the album CD "Wheels Within Wheels" plus the "Rockpalast Complete Collection 3 DVD" First Disc Cologne 1976 starts with 7 acoustic songs :).. As Rory would say live many times.. "I hope you enjoy the music" :)

Rock On for Rory

Welcome to Roryland. I would say start with the Irish Tour 74, Ghost Blues Documentary and the Essential Rory Gallagher collection. I became a Rory fan in 2007 as I never heard of him before then. This is how started listening to his music. Subrata.x Sorry I am reading too fast. Wheels Within Wheels is a good example of Rory's acoustic guitar work.
I love Rory's Unplugged Acoustic Guitar Sessions from 1977 and I just could hear his acoustic playing all day. I have learnt a lot from his acoustic playing and I love his homage to the Blues players from the old days. Subrata. x

Welcome! I'm fairly new to Rory's music as well, I've been a fan for a couple of years now. This is one of my favorites:

It's the only video I've ever seen where he started the show with an acoustic set. I really like this one because, not only is Rory in fine form in spite of some ongoing microphone issues, but he seems totally relaxed ; joking and laughing with the crowd, and taking technical problems in stride. In fact, I think I just have to watch it again myself right now. The second half is all electric, but watch it anyway..I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
