RORY CHRISTMAS with His Mother and family in Cork

Postby Jay Jay » 07 Dec 2014, 18:21

As most fans know, Rory with Donal always used to schedule his tour dates with his band..
So that he would finish the year in Ireland for Christmas and the New Year.

Spending Christmas at his Mother's home in Cork. How do you think Rory would spend this couple or more days there?

Would he have a traditional Christmas with his mother and family? Then afterwards would he sing carols / songs to everyone with his acoustic guitar after a meal with a few drinks..With chestnuts roasting on an open fire????

Would be interesting to know don't you think :)

Being vegetarian I would persuade Rory to have a "Veggie Christmas"  . Paul McCartney and his family have one every year no doubt! On a serious note I can imagine Rory having Christmas dinner with his family, opening his presents, watching Christmas programmes on digital tele and texting and saying hello to relatives on Skype around world. I can easily see him taking out his madolin or acoustic guitar and singing a few carols. Just really having a good time as we all do at Christmas with famly and friends. I will leave out listening to the Queens speech cos we only do that in the UK. Subrata.x

I recall reading somewhere, can't remember the specific source, of a Cork girls memories of staking out the the local church when they knew Rory would be home from touring, because he would always accompany his mother to evening mass. They would sit near them and gawk. Its a quaint thought, picturing Rory and his mom strolling the streets of Cork on a winters night, going to mass together. :)

I remember reading that too, it was on another fan forum, it wasn't on this forum, and I know it wasn't on that other forum that some FB friends moderate. But it was a retelling by a hometown fan of Rory's who spoke of it, Rory being in town in Cork to visit family, and how she and her girlfriends knew since he was in town, he'd be escorting his mother to evening mass that Saturday, and how they would make sure to be there in church to sit near enough to watch him during mass

  I could picture that, Rory and his long mane of hair, escorting his mother to church, and sitting close enough to hear him sing the responses and the hymns in church.

My daughter is a Jack White fan, and around my house I used to hear the song Jack did with the The Dead Weather- Blue Blood Blues (not to be confused by the song of the same name by Jellyroll Morton). And whenever I hear those lyrics:

And all the neighbors get pissed when I come home.
I make em nervous. Yeah, I make em nervous

Yeah, all the white girls trip when I sing at Sunday service.
Sing at Sunday service
Sing. Sing. Sing.

I think of that image, Rory and his mother paying attention to the services, and the neighborhood girls paying attention to Rory, and it makes me smile.

White is known more for his guitar playing, but his primary instrument is drums. The first time I saw him play live it was Jack and his guitar, with his band in the background, and the way he got the audience going, and the way he wrestles the music out of his guitar immediately brought back memories of seeing Rory live on stage for the first time. He has a very similar stage presence. But that is where the resemblance ends.

It is a nice thought and picture of Rory and Mother in Christmas passed :) I must say to myself, thanks Heatison :)

Suby I don't think those modern day gadgets were part of a traditional Christmas back in Rory's time :D

I know Rory would not be alone with his Mother Monica either going to Christmas Midnight mass. Donal would definitely be accompanying them too. As a few years ago I sang hymns and recited the catholic mass with him. At Barry O'Neill's wedding day mass to the lovely Lorraine :)
