Johnny Winter R.I.P Passed away at 70

Postby Johno123 » 17 Jul 2014, 10:27

I know it isn't relevant to Rory but news is coming through that Johnny Winter has passed away :(
It got me thinking though, Rory and Johnny always stuck to the blues for their whole career and were up there as the best blues guitarist we have seen.

Apologies Johno, as I was posting a topic in the R.I.P section at nearly the same time as yourself and did not see your topic until after I posted..
I was finding it difficult to merge the two same topics to put them together.
As you can see I eventually did do so. With your post at the top of this page.

Oh f***. That is sad. He was indeed a real legend.

To think that I just saw him about a month ago still rocking on stage.

:(

Sad indeed, and unexpected. He was touring in Europe. I shouldn't even mention this because I can't remember the source, but I recall reading about a mutual friend of both Rory and Johnny, and he stated that Johnny was critical of Rory's playing and negative toward him but this "friend" brought them together and Johnny since became a fan. Maybe someone with a better memory can remember the "Friend" or the article. It might just be one of those myths. Anyway.

Hey Tokeiihto,

maybe we went to the same concert? Berlin, Parkbuehne Biesdorf?
His playing was still great, wasn´t it ? Singing was also ok, but you couldn´t understand a word he was saying. And he could not walk alone. But it was nice to see how the other musicians cared for him, especially his rhythmguitarplayer.

thanks Johnny that I had the chance to see you playing live.

Yup, that's the one I was referring to.

Sad as it may be that another great one has left us - though some people have expressed that, given Johnny's lifestyle and substance abuse (especially heroin addiction) over the years, it was quite surprising he actually lived as long as he did -, at least he was able to do what he loved most until the end. Some of his contemporaries were not as fortunate as we all know only to well.

Regarding the concert, yes, you could see that life had definitively taken a toll on his body, but man, that little country boy still could play.
