FAVORITE OPENING LINES OF A RORY SONG

Postby capo » 21 Jun 2014, 23:43

Rory was/is a very underrated songwriter and lyricist, most people think of him as only a guitar slinger. He had a way with words. He could grab you with a few lines or more. I was thinking a fun thread would be your favorite opening lines to a song, not your favorite song necessarily, just memorable, great lines. I love "Country Mile", you just know your in for a wild ride:

Well, I was born on the side of a road
A gap in the hedge, did you hear what I said?

Born in a house with no slates but I wouldn't switch
I didn't have a stitch, always been out on a limb
I've been hard to mend like a kick in the shin

You'll only see me smile
When I eat up a country mile.........

He sings these lines in what seems a few seconds and then he's off!

As with so many things pertaining to Rory and his music, I don't have an absolute favorite. There are too many, and my favorite changes with my mood and the day, or maybe the phase of the moon

But one of my favorites is Cradle Rock:

If I was a cradle, then you'd let me rock
If I was a pony, then you'd let me trot
If I was the atom, you'd split me into three
But when I want to see you baby,
You lock your door on me.

Sounds like in this version, he changed the last line of the first verse,
"But when I want to see you baby
You set your dog on me"

Typical Rory, never did the same song, the same way twice 8-)

another killer version

Oh, and this one, thought of it earlier, today being the first day of summer- Morning Sun-

Looks like the morning sun,
That's come to play outside my window.
Another night has gone,
If something's changed then it does not show.

Great choices Roberta! There are so many to choose from. How about..."Like a bad penney, you turned up again". He hooks you right away.

Edged in Blue

I've cried enough tears to fill up an ocean
Surely you see that my world's been broken?

Here I am, where are you?
Help me please, help me through
Here I am, where are you?
All my days are edged in blue
