I heard another on the iPod- one that I never heard Rory play live, but the lyrics are so beautiful and the sentiment so heartfelt- I'm a little surprised he never played it live, at least none of the times I saw him- It has a country-western lilt to it that ordinarily I wouldn't be that partial to, but it has a very distinctive American feel- it's another one that he probably could have released as a single and it would have been a crossover hit- From Blueprint-

IF I HAD A REASON I’D TELL YOU WHAT IT IS
MUST I EXPLAIN HOW I FEEL
I’VE TRIED AND I’VE TRIED TO MAKE IT SO CLEAR
BUT MY TIME IS JUST WASTED I FEAR

WELL ITS ONLY AN OLD SONG BUT IT SERVES ITS PURPOSE WELL
BY THE CRY IN YOUR VOICE I CAN TELL
WHEN YOU SING THERE’S A FEELING BEHIND THE WORDS
THAT BRINGS IT ALL BACK AGAIN

I’M REACHING, I’M REACHING
WHILE YOU SLIP AWAY
I’M SEARCHING FOR WORDS I CAN SAY

I’M LISTENING, I’M LISTENING
TRYIN’ NOT TO HEAR
YOU SAY THAT WE MIGHT MEET SOME DAY

THERE’S A PICTURE THAT’S FADED AND CURLING FROM ITS FRAME
OF A FACE THAT SMILES PATIENTLY
IT MIGHT SMILE FOREVER TO MAKE ME FEEL BETTER
BUT I MUST WAIT AND SEE*

I’M REACHING, I’M REACHING
WHILE YOU SLIP AWAY
I’M SEARCHING FOR WORDS I CAN SAY

I’M LISTENING, I’M LISTENING
TRYIN’ NOT TO HEAR
YOU SAY THAT WE MIGHT MEET SOME DAY

ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS THAT WE BOTH WANT TO KNOW
BUT THOSE ANSWERS KEEP EVADING ME
THERE'S RHYMES AND THERE'S REASONS
THERE'S RIGHTS AND THERE'S WRONGS
FOR BEING WHAT YOU ARE TO ME

IF I HAD A REASON I’D TELL YOU WHAT IT IS
WOULD YOU DO THE SAME THING FOR ME
BECAUSE THE MINUTE YOU GO
THERE'S ONE THING I KNOW
THAT THE DAY WILL MEAN NOTHING FOR ME

I could be wrong, but these lyrics are very much in line with the musings of a man who was very much in love- struggling to make sense of a deep loss. I think it is one of those songs where he wore his heart on his sleeve without really thinking that anyone else would figure it out.

At any rate, the melody and the feeling behind it are very in keeping with what would probably have been a big country-western hit if he had chosen to release it that way, although the lyrics are much more substantial than the typical American country-western "I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison, and I drove my pickup to the train" kind of lyric. He may have been an Irishman, but he had the heart and soul of a cowboy, riding on a western plain-

Anyway, I think it was written about a specific woman, and I think she must have had a heart of stone.

His cover of Link Wray's "Tucson, Arizona" from Tattoo has the same vibe and tone musically as "If I Had A Reason". Rory was a big fan of Traditional Country Music.

Some of his songs could still make a splash with country fans. He seemed to really get the spirit of the genre. It's yet another facet of the Rory gem.

I always thought "Bought and Sold" could have been re-worked into a great country tune.

Hi Mike!!!!! Sorry I've been off the radar forever... issues of one kind or another. I hope you've been doing well.

Yeah man, "Bought and Sold" would do great with the country treatment. Now imagine this: A country guitar giants mega-jam (Chris Gill, Brad Paisley etc) on "Last of the Independents"!

Regards,
Richard

What about Shadow Play? What you think about it?

Clarification? Do you mean would it do as a rework into a country song? Or do you mean in general what do you think of it?

(I think it was the most creative use of a fever that an artist could do- Other songs said to have been written by artists while under the influence of a fever- Neil Young's song, Cinnamon Girl, and George Harrison's Don't Bother Me)

Yeah, I mean the meaning of the song.

Hi, Didyouever

The meaning in Shadow Play is all about Rory's mentality at the time he wrote the song. He wrote the song when suffering influenza. Probably taking the strong medication we all take while suffering flu symptoms. ie : Lemsip Max, Night Nurse, Beechams etc etc. Also maybe a whisky or brandy even? Thus getting light head feelings. Plus in and out of sleep modes. So you get a sort of a surreal world of being. Which the state of semi consciousness gives to you...

" I feel a little strange inside ".....

Rock On for Rory
