Sounds like an interesting drama, so I am going order it. Thanks Everglade Girl. I am sorry I haven't been able to participate regularly on this board but I have to complete my novel. Subrata. x

I have found some of these songs that Rory wrote about his life on the road and being in a band. For now its good to ponder over the lyrics before we discuss them. I really want to understand how Rory felt being in band, travelling on the road non-stop and the highs and lows of it. Is there any other songs he wrote regarding this subject. Please post them here. I will give my views soon. Just too busy at the moment. Subrata. x

Million Miles Away By Rory Gallagher

This hotel bar is full of people,
The piano man is really laying it down,
The old bartender is as high as a steeple,
So why tonight should I wear a frown?
The joint is jumpin' all around me,
And my mood is really not in style,
Right now the blues flock to surround me,
But I'll break out after a while.

Yes I'm a million miles away,
I'm a million miles away,
I'm sailing like a driftwood,
On a windy bay,
On a windy bay.

I'm a million miles away,
I'm a million miles away,
But I'm sailing like a driftwood,
On a windy bay,
On a windy bay.

Why ask how I feel,
Well, how does it look to you?
I fell hook, line and sinker,
Lost my captain and my crew.

I'm standing on the landing,
There's no one there but me,
That's where you'll find me,
Looking out on the deep blue sea.

There's a song on the lips of everybody,
There's a smile all around the room,
There's conversation overflowing,
But I sit here with the blues.

This hotel bar has lost all its people,
The piano man has caught the last bus home,
The old bartender just collapsed in the corner,
Why I'm still here, I just don't know,
I don't know.

I'm a million miles away,
A million miles away,
I'm sailing like a driftwood on a windy bay,
On a windy bay.

I'm a million miles away,
A million miles away,
I'm sailing like a driftwood on a windy bay,
Send me away...

Overnight Bag By Rory Gallagher
Packed my things in an overnight bag,
A toothbrush and guitar, got no tail to drag.
Gonna leave, on the next passing breeze.
My heart is heavy, as a sky full of rain,
Mind full of notions, that I just can't explain.
The reasons why, just can't be supplied.

Trapped by a heartache, and freed by my will,
Sentenced to wander, so much time to kill,
Hear my plea, and rescue me.

Packed my sorrows in an overnight bag,
But I'll be gone much longer than that,
Who knows when, we'll meet again?

Too many sleepless nights, put my soul on edge,
And so many restless moods, lay heavy in my head.

Too many sleepless nights, put my soul on edge,
And so many restless moods, lay heavy in my head.

Wrote down my thoughts, and I sealed them in hope,
Sent them to you in a blue envelope,
Not received, it seems to me.

I had some things that I wanted to say,
But my chance, well it just blew away,
On the breeze, like some mystery.

Just Hit Town By Rory Gallagher

Well, I just hit town and I flew in by the seat of my pants,
Well, I just touched down and got me some crazy plans.
I'm an ace, I'm a deuce, I'm a buzzin` all over the land,
And it ain't no use to change the way I am.
The way I am.....oh yeah...
Well, I just touched base, been in motion for a hundred days,
I'm wound up like a motor or a rocket in outer space.
I'm an ace, I'm a deuce, wont you put my mind at ease,
Well, I cant slow down, got to take some more of these.
More of these....oh yeah....ahhhhhh....

Wont you give me the green light, give me a chance to move,
Turn on your love-light, you know that I approve.

Well, I just touched ground and I got in by the seat of my pants,
I ain't broken down but I found a new place to land.
I'm an ace, I'm a deuce. I'm a crazy free-range man,
And it ain't no use to change my open plan.
Open plan....oh yeah....

Well, I'm feeling kinda crazy, want to go on a mad-cap spree,
Step on my air-brakes, I gonna let off some steam.
I'm an ace, I'm a deuce, I'm flyin` all over the land
And it ain't no use to change the way I am.
I'm an ace, I'm a deuce, I'm flyin` all over the land
And it ain't no use to change the way I am.
Yeah.....
The way I am.
Thank you mam.

Brute Force and Ignorance By Rory Gallagher
Brute Force and Ignorance,
Just hit town,
Looking like survivors,
From the Lost and Found.
Brute Force and Ignorance,
Have come to play,
A one-night stand at eight o`clock,
Then they`ll be on their way.

This old town`s exploding,
And the mayor`s uptight,
He`d like to make it to the show,
But he knows it`s not his night.

He`s got to be beholding,
To his legal spouse,
But she`s put the thumbscrews on him,
And snuck out of the house.

There she goes.

The picture on the poster,
Raised an eyebrow or two,
At fifty-five to seven,
Lord, you should`ve seen the queue.

City slick and country hick,
They came one and all,
The traffic-light girl and the downhome kids,
Assembled in the hall.

Brute Force and Ignorance,

Yes, that`s the name,
The young folks gonna miss them,
Now they`ve gone away.

Well, the show got so crazy,
Today they took the billboard down,
I`ll never forget the scene last night,
When the band was escorted out of town.

This little town`s back in slow motion,
I`m sad to say,
After the confusion,
It`ll never be the same.

Well, I took a walk down Main Street,
Just to pass the time,
And I could hear that music,
Still rolling through my mind.

Brute Force and Ignorance,
They sure hit town,
And if you want to find them, buddy,
They`re down at the Lost and Found.

Tattoo Lady By Rory GallagherTattoo'd Lady,
Bearded baby,
They're my family.
When I was lonely,
Something told me, where,
I could always be.

Where I could,
Wish for pennies,
If we had any.
You'd meet me down,
At the shooting gallery.

Yes I'm a,
Fair ground baby.
Wonder what made me,
Fall for the pearly queen.

I spent my youth,
Under canvas roof,
As I roamed from town to town.

I'm not fooling,
When I say I got no schoolin',
Never like the class bell sound.

From the caravan,
I hear the fairground band,
Sounding good as they can be.

You know I can't be found,
But if you look around,
Tomorrow we'll be gone by dawn.
Alright...

Now hear it on the loud speaker say,
The fire eater is a real fine sight to see,
Yeah he's a death cheater,
Some kind of central heater,
Be sure to save a seat for me.

Let me tell you 'bout wicked Sadie,
She's no baby,
The law came,
And tried to close her sideshow down.
But soon she had the D.A. cheering,
The police chief wearing,
Her garter for a crown.

I spent my youth,
Under canvas roof,
As I roamed from town to town.

I'm not fooling,
When I say I got no schoolin',
Never like the school bell sound.

From the caravan,
I hear the fairground band,
Sounding good as they can be.

You know I can't be found,
But if you look around,
Tomorrow we'll be gone by dawn.
Yeahh...

Tattoo'd Lady,
Bearded baby,
They're my family.

When I was lonely,
Something told me, where,
I could always be.

Where I could,
Wish for pennies,
If we had any.
You'd meet me down,
At the shooting gallery.

This one- In retrospect it gives me chills. I for one do not believe he was an alcoholic, but he did drive himself too hard, and for whatever reason I think he thought of alcohol as being a relatively benign release as compared to so many other weaknesses that people fall prey to on the road, and I believe that were it not for the interaction with the acetaminophen (paracetamol in Europe) that everyone thought was so harmless, and the stuff the doctors were giving him, he'd have been ok with it. Anyway, these lyrics, especially toward the end:

-BOURBON-

WELL HE’S DRINKING DOWN THE BOURBON LIKE IT WAS SODA POP
TRYING TO QUELL THE FEELING HE KNOWS AIN’T GONNA STOP
HE’S MORTGAGED OUT HIS BLOOD FOR ONE MORE CHANCE TO BREATH

HE HAD THE D.T.’S FOR BREAKFAST, THE SHAKES TILL NOON
HE PACKED UP HIS BAG AND LEFT HIS MOTEL ROOM
HIS HEAD HELD HIGH BUT HIS HEART IS ON ITS KNEES

WELL HE’S PACKED HIS GUITAR AND HIS BAR-ROOM TAN
GOTTA GET SOME MILES BEHIND HIM AS FAST AS HE CAN
ANOTHER DESTINATION SOME PLACE ELSE TO PLAY

WELL HE LEFT A LIFE BEHIND HIM IN SOME OLD TRAILER PARK
THEY TRIED TO MAKE IT WORK IT WAS RUINED FROM THE START
HE HAD TO SHAKE THE RUST, IT BECAME TIME TO LEAVE

IT’S A HONKY TONK ENGAGEMENT
BUT THERE’S NO BETTER PLACE TO PLAY
HIS FACE FEELS LIKE CRAZY PAVEMENT
IT’S GETTING MORE LINED EVERY DAY

WELL HE’S GONNA A WRITE A LETTER TO TRY AND EXPLAIN
SHE SAY’S HE’S TOO OLD TO HAVE THESE GROWING PAINS
BUT SOMETHING KEEPS HIM MOVING LIVING ON THROUGH THE NIGHT

BUT AS NIGHT APPROACHES A CHANGE IS IN THE AIR
HIS HEART IS PUMPING FAST HE’S GOT NO CARES
THE MUSIC BEFRIENDS HIM IT CAN TAKE HIM ANYWHERE

IT’S A HONKY TONK ENGAGEMENT
BUT THERE’S NO BETTER PLACE TO PLAY
HIS FACE FEELS LIKE CRAZY PAVEMENT
IT’S GETTING MORE LINED EVERY DAY

WELL HE’S DRINKING DOWN THE BOURBON LIKE IT WAS SODA POP
TRYING TO QUELL THE FEELING HE KNOWS AIN’T GONNA STOP
HE’S MORTGAGED OUT HIS BLOOD FOR ONE MORE CHANCE TO PLAY

HE HAD THE D.T.’S FOR BREAKFAST, THE SHAKES TILL NOON
HE PACKED UP HIS BAG AND LEFT HIS MOTEL ROOM
HIS HEAD HELD HIGH BUT HIS HEART IS ON ITS KNEES

Donal wrote that "Daughter of the Everglades" was inspired by a book that Rory had been reading.

Agree with you there very much.

Is Rory speaking about his own life in Bourbon because I can't work out how the "trailer park" bit fits on, or is this just poetic license?

Subrata, theres also Livin' Like a Trucker not sure if you included that one?

I'd say poetic license, the subject in the song sounds like more a garden-variety hard-working musician, you know, the ones that eek out a living playing here and there, don't make much more than enough to sustain themselves, but don't know any other way to get by. Rory was a successful musician, but I'm sure he knew what the less fortunate in his field experienced, and toward the end, when illness began to dominate his life, I think the despair illuminated in the lyrics rang true to him.

LIVING LIKE A TRUCKER BY RORY GALLAGHER

Well I've been livin' like a trucker
For a month or more
Well, I'm steaming like diesel
That cannot feel it's throat

Well, I'm closing all the windows
Keeping out the rain
But I'm not complaining
In fact, I'd do it all again
I'm a ramblin' man
Cannot stop a travelin' man

I've been singing for my supper
But I never get to eat
Well, I queue up at the diner
But I cannot find a seat

Well, I've been livin' like a gypsy
Feeling like a king
Really feel like singin', you know
That's the mood I'm in
I'm a ramblin' man
Some kind of travelin' man

You'll never catch me working 9 to 5
That's for some people, but me, I wanna ride
All around the world, to the planet's end
I've seen some places, but more, I ain't seen yet, yeah

Lose an hour, gain an hour
Somewhere on a map
Flying through the time zone
Another plane to catch

Why, I've always gotta see
What's on the other side
So I pack my bag, get on my way
And catch my train and ride

I've been livin' like a hawker
In days, both hot and cold
Well, I'm sleeping if I have to
Before the wagons roll

Well, I've been hopin' and I've been prayin
Since I was last here
Tell your mama not to worry
Come on, baby, get on up here

'm a ramblin' man
Some kind of travelin' man

Well, I've been livin' like a trucker
For a month or more
Well, I'm steaming like diesel
That cannot feel it's throat

Well, I'm closing all the windows
Keeping out the rain
But you won't hear me complaining
In fact, I'd do it all again
I'm a travelin' man
Some kind of ramblin' man

Yes, I'd do it all again
I'd do it all again, baby

MAYBE I WILL RORY GALLAGHER This is how he felt when he got home according to the Deuce booklet by Donal Gallagher.

Running through a pool of rain
I think i'll do it one more time again
I hope i always feel this way
maybe i will

Searching for a piece of ground
where i can lay my body down
with the earth for a pillow under my head

Wake up in the morning
it's a brand new day
And though it seems the same
it's different from yesterday
Then i read the leaves
and put my cup away
[ From: http://www.metrolyrics.com/maybe-i-will ... agher.html ]

Running down a country lane
Looking on a a field of grain
Just to see you smile
makes me feel alive again

Opening another door
I'll see what i have not seen before
Maybe i'll find what i'm looking for

Running through a pool of rain
I think i'll do it one more time again

Travelin' man, travelin' man
Yeah

PHILBY - BY RORY GALLAGHER

Now ain't it strange that I feel like Philby,
There's a stranger in my soul,
I'm lost in transit in a lonesome city,
I can't come in from the cold,
I'm deep in action on a secret mission,
Contact's broken down,
Time drags by, I'm above suspicion,
There's a voice on the telephone
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Well it sure is dark in this clockwork city,
Contact's never gonna show,
I've got a code which can't be broken,
My eyes never seem to close,
Well, I'm standing here in the silent city,
Shadows falling down,
I'm disconnected but I don't need pity,
The night's gonna burn on slow.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Now ain't it funny that I feel like Philby,
A stranger on a foreign shore,
I've got my plans and I must move quickly,
There's a knock upon the door,
Still in transit and I'm close to danger,
My cover can't be blown,
It's getting strange and it's getting crazy,
Tell me, what is going on?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Four o'clock and nothing's moving,
Six o'clock and the daylight's stirring,
A Morning comes, must be moving on.
All night long my mind's been burning,
Makes me feel such a long, long way from home,

Now ain't it strange that I feel like Philby,
There's a stranger in my soul
I'm lost in transit in a lonesome city
I can't come in from the cold

Philby song meaning from 4.00 into the interview. Also Rory does say how hard travelling a long time can be hard and staying in the same square hotel room all the time. He could relate to Philby's constant travelling. Subrata. I will give my views soon on Rorys travelling and how he felt etc.

Its You - Rory Gallagher lyrics

When the days begin to climb on me
And I begin to feel that I can't please
There's only one thing I can do
Call on the one who pulls me through, that is you, yeah, you

When I'm lost in some old lonely town
And there ain't no sign of you around
A voice comes whispering through my ear
And I can almost feel you here so near, so near

When the nights begin to drag me down
And there ain't nobody else around
There's only one place I must be
Close to you, you close to me, to me, to me

When the days begin to climb on me
And I begin to feel that I can't please
There's only one thing I can do
Call on the one who pulls me through, that is you, that is you

"It's one of the country songs from my first album. Telecaster, steel guitar and mandolin... [I like country] but not sugar coated country. More like Waylon Jennings, Johnny Paycheck, Merle Haggard, the honky-tonk style. Violins and choirs, very few for me. It's like I just recorded it yesterday. I've always had a weakness for that song, which isn't the case for all I've done. I like the mandolin part, it's an excellent rhythmic instrument that hardly anyone uses. It's a shame." Rory Gallagher.

You say you have a weakness for this song Rory? Hmm. Subrata. x

Just A Smile by Rory Gallagher

Just the smile that is spreading all over her face,
Could warm up the room and set fire to the place.
Yes it could, you know it could.

Now the fog is clinging all over the town,
Put one foot in front then you just might fall down.
On the ground, she's in town.

But like the rain that is falling all over the land,
She cools down my mind when she touches my hand.
Feels so good, yeah so good.

Just the smile that is spreading all over her face,
Could warm up the room and set fire to the place.
Yes she could, you know it could.

"I like the Irish song writing style. If I find a good old Irish tune, I'll do it. But it has go go along with my style. There's a tune like that on my first Lp, 'Just The Smile'." -- Rory Gallagher

Hi Rory. I wish I had your beautiful smile. Subrata. x Will discuss Rory travelling around soon - highs and lows. x :D
