I met folk my parents age who told me about corporal punishment and its not pleasant. I did visit one high school a few years back through my job and they really do inspire children to follow their natural gifts so things are changing abeit slowly though.

My cousin Anjan is a poet ( he has done work for BBC 1 and Channel 4) and thanks to him I got back into writing. He does challenge my thinking processes as a writer. We were in a cafe ( writers love cafes and hot chocolate with whipped cream on top!) and he was talking about "Are you really free?" And I am like well yes I suppose so. I guess I am a 21st woman: strong, empowered, independent and does her own thing. I told him we do have more choices these days then our parents. And he puts forwards ideas that we aren't free as we thought and hence the poem "Freedom" came about. The music is a bit Banghra beat and I think they are playing the Bansuri flute loulamb.

A lot of my own writing follows the Mind Body and Soul genre but there is an underlying theme of wanting to free the soul as my poem I wrote shows:-

LABYRINTH
Dark grey building
Jutting into the sky
Clouds of grey passing by
.. ..
A tower, a prison
A place of no reason
My blood turns cold and crimson
As I look into your deep blue eyes
.. ..
The cold rugged landscape
Of bluish concrete
Ugly dark shapes and twisted black
Knurled bricks and dense cracks
.. ..
You edge closer
Dark impending walls
Blue flames of white and gold
I suddenly feel so cold
.. ..
A beam of light through the open window
Grey clouds part for second
New life beckons
Dungeon walls reside
You are now by my side.
.. ..
Time stands still
In this cold dark abyss
You gently touch my lips
As I feel your poisonous kiss
Theseus opens the labyrinth door
I follow the golden thread
To see the light once more.
BY SUBRATA SAHA (OCTOBER 2010)

I really these days shouldn't moan too much about the "lack of freedom". Rory's days were much harder but Roberta you are right it does seem a really exciting time when Blister of the Moon was written!I like that excitement! Rory was really brave and courageous to follow his heart in those days and another reason why i admire him, because I know it is a difficult path to follow!

I love the film Matrix and Spice Girls ( i just let out my secret and I can see folk going Oh No) rebellious songs "Tell me what you want? What you really, really want?"

Finally my cousin loves London and knows it inside out. Subrata. x

BORN ON THE WRONG SIDE OF TIME - TASTE.

Born on the wrong side of time,
Even your best friend,
Is ready, to watch you die.

You don't want to live on the street,
So you've got to sweat till your'e dead,
To make ends meet.

Born on the wrong side of time,
Your days are so cold,
That you curse, just something to cry.

That you should be living in fear,
When you cry out,
Your friends just don't want to hear.

And you dream, of the day,
When the great mastertime,
Will call us .... to his side.

And you watch, your brothers,
Shake with fear, as they watch,
His serpintine .... eye.

And you can smell, their fear,
As they stand, and curse,
The fact that they're .... alive.

Born on the wrong side of time,
Pretend to yourself,
That some day, you'll do just fine.

You know that you live through a lie,
You'll only find out what went wrong,
When the sun makes us cry.

Can anyone interpretate Born On The Wrong Side of Time any further? Subrata. x

Well, like a bad penny you've turned up again,
You're in my sights, there's a mist on my lens.
I think you know how it was when I tripped and fell,
Well, you double-dealed me, baby and I broke like a shell.
Like a bad penny you've sure lost the glow
But I'm out of reach, your smile's sure gone cold.
Well, it can't ever be like it was then,
Well, don't you fool with me, baby,
Don't you mess with my plans.

Some stormy nights, your memory haunts me,
You won't go away.

Well, like a bad penny you have turned up in the change,
Try to fit into the picture, you can't get inside the frame.
I think you know I'm still sore, but I'm on the mend,
Times sure have changed, it won't happen again.

Well, like a bad penny spins around and around,
Well, you won't know what's gone wrong when it all falls down,
You got to learn from now on to stop playing games,
You ought to keep on moving, you got to spin on your way.

Some lonely nights, I hear you calling,
Won't you go away?

Well, like a bad penny you have turned up again,
You're in my sights, there's a mist on my lens.
I think you know how it was when I tripped and fell,
Well, you double-dealed me, baby, I cracked like a shell.
You're in my sight......but there's a mist on my lens

in my opinion those are some of the best lyrics rory ever put on paper! and they are even better cos they are sung really great and whole song is top notch.
I watched as fear took the old men's gaze
Hopes of the young in troubled graves
'I see no day' I heard him say
So grey is the face of every mortal

I find it hard to separate the songs Blister on the Moon and Born On The Wrong Side of Time in terms of their subject , they seem to be this same feeling, I had thought the 'Serpintine eye' was the clockface , but then it sounded more like a sinister person. What are your thoughts on this one?

Hello, have seen in the RoryOn interviews Rory gives a brief explanation of some of his song meanings including Kickback City;

(16) How do you feel your song-writing has changed. Up to "JINX" a lot of the songs involved the usual male/female relationship topics. But "CALLING CARD" etc., seemed to be very introspective and personal.
Answer: I've written on other subjects besides human relationships over the years, such as:
"RACE THE BREEZE" -Endless magical train trip.
"SOUPED UP FORD" -Manic speed in mythical car.
"SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON" -Faith healer story
"MISSISSIPPI SHEIKS -Song about early acoustic blues group
"BIG GUNS" -Crime story. A man caught between the mob and the law
"SIGNALS" Outer limits idea ,
"LAST OF THE INDEPENDENTS" Gangster manhunt
SINNER BOY" Helpless vagrant
etc etc
Around the 'DEFENDER' songs I felt a new feeling in my songs and imagery
"KICKBACK CITY" - Big city menace and depression
"CONTINENTAL OP"- Wry song about tough P.I.
"DOIN' TIME" - Revenge/prison tension theme
"SMEAR CAMPAIGN" Dirty tricks, election fever
There is general unity to this album. "FRESH EVIDENCE" also has a mood to it with emphasis on ethnic blues sound etc.
Also ,"MIDDLE NAME", "HEAVENS GATE", "KING OF ZYDECO", "THE LOOP"

Sorry I haven't reply to this post. I am between "two worlds" at present. I think both songs carry the same theme and yes it does sound like a sinister person. I will like to discuss next time what it was like for Rory to travel on the road, playing everynight and the highs and lows and obviously at times the loneliness. Its like a book discussion yeah! I go to bookclubs by the way. Subrata. x

Daughter of the Everglades

Were you were raised by the river
Down in the low, low land
Where the air is dark and sinister
In the night there's no safe place to stand

In the reeds there are eyes that peek
Voices I can't understand
Flamingos flying endlessly
Into the silent sky

Daughter of the everglades
You never made it clear
Child of the river
If you wanted to be here
Daughter of the everglades
I never saw your tears

Well you looked like your mama
Before you walked, you swam
Learned to make that snake tail stew
From your daddy
Crazy talking fisherman

In this place there is no law
The river makes all the rules
What they are, I found out
When I came to look for you

Daughter of the everglades
Why did you bring me here?
Daughter of the everglades
My love has turned to fear
Daughter of the everglades
Let me feel you near

Well you laughed in the city
But I knew after a year
That you'd cry in the city
I should not have brought you here
So far from the bayou
Down in the low, low land
Don't know why you left me
But now I think I understand

I love this song and the everglades are found in the Southern States. I may know which book Rory may be referring too as the song and story are very similar. I would like to know so maybe this question could be put forward to Donal Gallagher? Subrata. x

It makes me think of the Giraudoux ´s drama
Called "Ondine" written In 1939 , its eponymous heroin is a Spirit of waters, rivers and oceans, she embodies purity of heart and soul , she is transparent. Well she falls In love with a beautiful and idiot knight and she tries to live with him In The human society, In the city but she can ´t lie and be hypocrite, I don ´ t tell the whole story for those who are interested In reading this drama , I didn ´ t read its english translation but I hope the beauty of the deep meaning of this drama shows .Maybe Rory did read it?

That sounds quite plausible. Rory was well read, and who knows, if it wasn't that one exactly, I bet it was inspired by that story. That part of the South is ripe with that kind of atmosphere and romantic legacy, so it could easily serve as a modern backdrop for such a tale. I'll have to run down an English translation and read it. Perhaps that was the exact same drama and Rory retold it in his song with the Everglades as the backdrop. Hadn't he just come off a long tour of the American South when he wrote that one?
