Must See Band Now in Cork: Gerry Quigley & The Shinkickers

Postby Sharon Quigley » 16 Sep 2014, 03:06

Dublin's Gerry Quigley has returned home to Ireland after 30 years touring and recording in Perth, Western Australia and is now based in Cork City where he has formed the Irish lineup of his 5-piece blues/rock and originals band, The Shinkickers. Having recently returned home to Cork from a succesful tour of Perth, Western Australia with the Australian lineup of his band, The Shinkickers (Ireland) have been gigging every weekend in Cork City and surrounding areas and don't look like stopping any time soon!

A timeless favourite in Australia since they were first formed in Perth in 1991 and named after the Rory Gallagher tune Shinkicker, Gerry and his band The Shinkickers have built a solid reputation over the past 23 years for their for no-nonsense, captivating, inspiring, mesmerising, blues/rock sound along with Gerry's "blow you away" kind of "WOW"! blues/rock guitar playing, and his ecclectic collection of guitars and other things with strings which he plays at every gig.

Although definitley not a tribute band, this is an original blues/rock band with plenty of their own amazing original songs, Gerry Quigley's biggest inspiration and influence in developing his own unique style of course is Rory Gallagher, along with other legends of course Gary Moore, Eric Bell, Paul Kossoff to name a few.

It is very possible that Gerry Quigley's band The Shinkickers was the first band named as a tribute to Rory Gallagher, as Dublin blues/rock guitarist Gerry formed The Shinkickers in Australia in 1991, some four years before Rory died. Rory is such an influence in Gerry's own musical career, that Gerry has honoured Rory at every single gig with the band since their debut in 1991 by always including some awesome Rory Gallagher tunes in every Shinkickers show. Something that has become expected of him over the years in Perth, just as it is now becoming expected as he gigs around Rory Gallagher's hometown of Cork City, Ireland.

Gerry is well known for bringing Rory's music to the crowds of thousands in Perth and throughout Western Australia through his gigs and also through his many guitar students, who were all required to learn Rory Gallagher's music! (and they all loved it, of course) Gerry was also responsible for Perth's Iconic 78 Records selling Rory's music, at the request of his many fans who came to the gigs and also his many guitar students. Gerry always makes sure all of his guitar students buy Rory's albums when they are learning to play. Although Gerry is now living in Cork, Ireland he is still teaching his Perth guitar students every week via Skype, still teaching them Rory's music and they never stop loving it!

No two gigs are exactly the same, you could hear many of our original classics, like Weeping Willow, Broken Down Blues, Sunset, Do Anything For You, along with many great blues classics from the legends such as BB King, George Thorogood, The Doors, Cream, Joe Bonamassa, Buddy Guy, Peter Green (eg. our favourite The Supernatural), Roy Buchanan (eg. The Messiah), Pink Floyd just to name a few and of course, there are always some awesome tracks from Rory Gallagher.

Gerry grew up in Dublin in the 1970's in a musical family where rock and roll was a way of life. Running home from school to witness legendary blues/rock guitarist Gary Moore rehearsing in his lounge room with older brother/bassist Pat Quigley; watching countless early band rehearsals in the Quigley family home by Irish rock gods Thin Lizzy and convincing legendary Thin Lizzy guitarist Eric Bell to provide him with a few guitar lessons are just some of the childhood memories Gerry cherishes and remembers like yesterday.

Such legendary influences in Gerry's childhood certainly set the standard and Gerry is renowned for captivating audiences with a display of spectacular guitar wizardry you must see to believe, and his ecclectic collection of instruments including electric guitar, acoustic guitar, slide guitar, mandolin and a unique double-neck mandola/bouzouki.

Gerry's signature style of magical, mystical feel guitar playing with diverse, melodic instrumental solos have been described as simply breathtaking and may even take you away to another world. With Gerry Quigley & The Shinkickers, one thing is certain - prepare to be captivated!

Currently holding their No.1 place again on the Reverbnation Charts for Blues, Ireland a position they have held onto regularly since they started gigging in Cork City earlier in 2014, when you hear Gerry Quigley & The Shinkickers play it's not hard to see why ... you'll know instantly when you hear them play live, that this man and his band have something special ... when he plays those Rory tunes, many people even swear that if they close their eyes they can hear Rory playing ...

If you are heading to Cork City, and wanting to hear an awesome blues/rock band with some authentic Rory Gallagher tunes, before you book your trip be sure to check the gig guide of Gerry Quigley & The Shinkickers to make sure you can catch one of their shows. You'll find their gigs on Bandsintown, Facebook, Reverbnation and of course their website http://www.theshinkickersband.com. or Gerry's website http://www.gerryquigleymusic.com.

You'll be glad you did, you'll be in for a real treat!

HI Subrata, Gerry Quigley & The Shinkickers won't be playing as part of the Cork Rocks for Rory Festival, they are already booked for another festival in Cork on that weekend!

Just like last year, there will be other Rory Gallagher celebrations going on around Cork City on the same weekend !!
and we are very pleased to say that Gerry Quigley & The Shinkickers will be playing another of their jaw-dropping Rory Gallagher shows on Saturday June 6th at Ziggy's Rock n Blues Bar Cork, as part of the Ziggy's "Roots of Irish Rock Festival 2015" and it's all FREE to get in!

It's also most likely that on Friday June 5th, Gerry Quigley & The Shinkickers will repeat their spectacular Rory Gallagher show at Canty's Bar Cork, where they played to a packed house last year. Another FREE gig!
check their website for gig guide details:
http://www.theshinkickersband.com
or http://www.gerryquigleymusic.com

Be great to see you at either show!
(I'm the keyboard player, if you go to one of our gigs, be sure to say hello!)
