A limited edition ‘JS Berlin Legend’ Patrick Eggle electric guitar, owned by Irish blues and rock legend Rory Gallagher is being auctioned on Friday 11 April near Kendal, South Cumbria.

One of the last guitars to be owned by Gallagher, who died in 1995 aged 47, it is only one of 30 ‘JS Berlin Legend’ Patrick Eggle guitars to be built by the acclaimed British company.

Custom built to suit Rory’s playing style, it is distinguishable by its gloss finish and the initials ‘RG’ on the 12th fret of the fretboard. It was made in Coventry in October 1992.

Patrick J Eggle remembers working on the guitar. He also played it before it left the factory saying he wanted to perform one of Rory’s best known songs, ‘Messin with the Kid’, on it before Rory did. A world-renowned Luthier, who has been making guitars since he was 15 years old, Patrick J Eggle has built electric and acoustic guitars for some of the biggest names in the business. They include Brian May, Tony Iommi, Midge Ure, Oliver Lieber, Brian Ray, Tony Remy as well as new stars like Jake Bugg and Frank Turner.

Rory Gallagher was a universally acclaimed international folk hero who influenced many musical generations. From Slash to Johnny Marr, from U2 to Queen’s Brian May, and The Manics’ James Dean Bradfield. He also had the respect of his musical peers. Eric Clapton credited him with “getting me back into the blues”, The Rolling Stones wanted him to replace Mick Taylor and when Jimi Hendrix was asked how it felt to be the world's greatest guitarist he said "I don't know, go ask Rory Gallagher”. Rory would guest on albums by Belfast bands he inspired, Energy Orchard and Stiff Little Fingers as well as play on albums of those who inspired him; Jerry Lee Lewis, Albert King, Albert Collins and Muddy Waters.

Eighteen years after his death the 2013 Classic Rock Awards honoured him with the Tommy Vance 'Inspiration' Award saying: “The ability to inspire a new generation is a genuinely special trait. To be an inspirational figure you must not only be mercurially talented, but also a boundary-pusher, someone who breaks down walls and refuses to let their creativity be stifled.”

Pictures of Gallagher with his ‘JS Berlin Legend’ Patrick Eggle guitar accompany the CD ‘Big Guns - The Very Best of Rory Gallagher’ and the DVD ‘Ghost Blues’. It is not known if he used the guitar for any public performances.

“Rory Gallagher combined fierce fret work, a rugged voice and a love of the blues, rock 'n' roll, folk and R&B, to forge a sound all his own” explains Kevin Kendal, auctioneer at 1818 Auctioneers, who has the job of selling it. “The sale of this guitar represents a rare opportunity to connect to a great and genuine musician. Its Patrick Eggle pedigree means it’s been made to an exceptionally high standard.

“We are expecting a lot of interest in the guitar from Eggle and Gallagher fans. We hope it will make at least £12,000 in the April sale for its owner who wishes to remain anonymous” adds Kevin.

The guitar has a figured maple finish, with mother of pearl inlay to the neck, including the ‘RG’ monogram. It has a slightly higher action than many electric guitars as this was Rory’s preference. The guitar comes in a fitted Patrick Eggle hard flight case, which features the Patrick Eggle logo.

It is being sold in a specialist musical instrument and rock and pop memorabilia sale by 1818 Auctioneers on Friday 11 April at their J36 home. The sale also includes a vinyl record and autograph collection. The sale will start at 11am with viewing from 8am that day.

It's a beautiful guitar. It will bring a good price. I think it's going to go for way more than any garden variety fan like me would ever be able to afford, except in my wildest dreams maybe. :)
