Rory's tone

Well, that song she's humming, could make my guitar start strumming?

Rory's tone

Postby Philby47 » 08 Apr 2013, 18:17

Hello everyone!
I have been admiring Rory's guitar magic for 4 years now - and I still can't get enough of it!
I've recently been fiddling around with my amp settings but I still can't get the tone I want.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxiEMpcI83E - Can anyone help me with some approximate amp settings?

I know he used a treble booster, but I'm not currently in possession of a good TB!
I have a 20 Watt Hughes&Kettner Statesman, if that helps.

Can you also suggest some amp settings for blues stuff a la Cluney Blues, Walk on hot coals?

Thank you very much, Rory-fans!

philby47, i am able to get VERY close to Rory's sound but i have a homebuilt treble booster (rangemaster clone) which is a stand alone unit. it's got a germanium cv7003 (oc44) transistor and i run it at about 3:00 on the boost. i also have a vox ac30c2 i play on the normal channel. my brown sunburst strat has fender 57/62 (older models no rw/rp middle)pickups, my tone is wired like Rory's master tone set up. my pots are 250k audio and i use a .047uf 50v ceramic cap. i love the vox because the normal channel dosen't use and eq except the tone cut, it really simplifies things. the sound i can get is more his Taste and Rory Gallagher album sounds which is just what i want.i'm not familliar with the HK amp but i can tell you if you have el84 tubes in it you can get close to the sound. also you can easily get all the parts for a rangemaster clone and the schematics on line. you just need some soldering skills(not too difficult any monkey can do it). the T.B. is a key part of Rory's sound as i described. my rangemaster clone cost me about $50( u.s.) no need to spend the money that some folks want for a clone(it should be a sin). i knew i had the sound when my wife screamed turn that ---- down! yeh, i think Rory would be proud. i hope this helps. good luck.

Thank you for the lengthy answer! I'll try and find the schematics and start building it (I've been looking for a project to work on anyway). HK has 2 el84 tubes in it and it has an excellent clean and a punchy OD channel, quite nice. My pickups could be the real problem actually, they aren't very good and I may even replace them with Bare Knuckles Irish tour!

Thanks, that is a bit cheaper than the Irish Tour!

I wish to order these vintage ©62 pickups but... to use it on my Mexican stratocaster 2004...
My friends told me that I need to have the body of american strat or to have american strat...
I didn't know yet what the sound I will get using these new pickups. But, the wood of my strat are pretty good and it has great sustain. I like it. Maybe this idea is not so crazy, what do you think?

If your current pickups aren't much, then I think it is certainly a welcome improvement. What kind of wood is your Strat made of?

My MIM Strat is model of 2004-2005, has a s/n MZ4+6 digits... I think the body was made from alder.

my brown sunburst strat is an mim and it is more resonant than my eric clapton strat. i sat in the guitar store and played it along with an american strat and liked the mim better. the mim i have has a nice volume to it when played unpluged, that is very important with any guitar. i only wish it had a nitro finish but it's ok anyway.

Guys, did you fix the tone or volume knobs to use it in the way like Rory did? I mean the trembles while rolling the knob. I want to know the wires scheme.
