Sound technique?

Postby Tom Jonas » 05 Mar 2016, 21:27

I have, at last, discovered Gary Moore. His great time was about ten years, at least, later than Rory's. He had such an excellent sound, crisp and loud, some feedback, but very clear. Same thing with Bonamassa. Was this because of a development in the area of sound, technically?
Many of Rory's various recordings on video and DVDs are missing this distinct sound. How would his sound have been, let's say ten years later, if he would have been still fit for fight?
Imagine Rory in a filled Albert Hall 1996, or so!
Technically he must have been as able as Gary Moore?

IMHO, part of it is evolving recording technology. If you listen to a later recording, for example Heaven's Gate, that's every bit as big sounding as anything Moore recorded around the same time. Part of it is gear. Moore preferred a Paul through a Soldano...a strat will never sound as big as that :). Part of it is their background. Rory began in the blues, Moore in prog metal, so it's natural that Rory was aiming for something more subtle and nuanced and Moore something more bombastic.

Did Rory ever play a Les Paul on any recording? Would be interesting to study the difference in sound compare with a Strat. But perhaps others have demonstrated the difference.
