Covers of Rory Songs??

Postby Sid_Sidow » 19 Jan 2013, 17:54

With all the great songs he has written, I'm a bit surprised that no one seems to cover or record their version of the song.
(I think Joe Bonamassa did Cradle Rock on one of his CDs)

Is there maybe a reason? Does the family not want to have his music covered?
Thanks!! ss

How it can be? :)

Look to Barry Barnes (Sinnerboy) or to Marcel Scherpenzeel (Wolfpin) ... these bands and a lot others are playing a lot of incredible Rory covers.

I know there are a lot of tribute bands.
But I was more thinking of some current mainstream artist - Bonamassa was an example.....

Just wondering if the family wants to keep/protect the good name.
Thanks!! ss

Re: Covers of Rory Songs?? TV Coverage??

Somewhat along the same lines - to keep the Rory music alive!!

I was watching (US cable TV) VH1 classic, they have a Friday Night "Rock and Roll Picture Show".
But Monday night they played the Band "Last Waltz" I would think Irish Tour '74 would be a natural for this!!!

Of course I've had the vinyl, CD, DVD for a long time. What better place to get more people to say "Wow, he's good!!"
How can we lobby to get this moving??
Thanks!! ss

I like this cover of Bad Penny by Tony Torres & The Five Strings Band, it's included in their record Mr. Moore.

They're an spanish band from Galicia (our celtic region)

I don't think the family would have a problem at all with Rory's songs being covered. And I'm surprised it hasn't happened in a big way. Yes, I know many of Rory's fans who also play cover his songs. But for one of them to go mainstream, it would almost have to be because something thrust the song into the headlights- as Breaking Bad did for El Paso or Baby Blue, or Pulp Fiction and . . . where to begin-

I'd add the scene from Reservoir Dogs- Stuck in the Middle With You- but it's pretty intense-

Same with the movie Blue Velvet and Candy Colored Clown-

(don't worry Jay Jay- the clip stops before the real weirdness starts

BTW- I think Rory saw that David Lynch movie-and I think he enjoyed it, because, right before he launches into The Loop, with a wry smile, he sings- ( I'd love to be able to talk to him about all the books and movies he read and saw- would love to know what he thought about them- I bet I've seem many of the same, and to hear his opinions, that would have been great  )

"A Candy Coated Clown They Call the Sandman" 8-) in that same voice.

I'd like to see either Rory's original recordings worked into something destined to be a TV or movie mega-hit, as was Breaking Bad, or any number of movies where music is interwoven into the storyline, or see a mainstream artist do an excellent cover of Rory's music.

I think the family would be thrilled to have Rory's music covered. Donal had said before that he really had hoped that Dylan would have covered Rory's "Could've Had Religion." I think Jack White or Dan Auerbach would also do his music justice.

The possibilities are limitless.

I prefer Joe 13 years ago' rather than 3 years ago. When he was more raw & Rory style. Plus he dressed more like Rory too :)
