Rory & Phil Lynott ~ Punchestown July 1982

Who's that calling way out there? I've got your signal loud and clear

Rory & Phil Lynott ~ Punchestown July 1982

Postby jgarlo » 07 Oct 2012, 11:45

I only found out the other day when reading "Riding Shotgun" that Rory and Phil Lynott played a few numbers together at Punchestown. In one of these number Rory plays some fabulous slide guitar and I would like to get hold of these tracks somehow. Is this possible?

Hi Jgarlo,
First of all welcome to Roryland.
Yes, possibly my two greatest rock hero's did play together in Punchestown Ireland. I always thought it was 1982?
Here is one of the songs they played there. Phil vocals notice how he introduces Rory for the solo lead guitar :)

I wish there was a video and higher quality audio of that one. Perhaps someone has a clearer copy and will upload it someday. It isn't the clearest photo, but I notice that in that one shot Rory looks quite a bit like John Lennon in that photo. Does anyone else see that resemblance?

I think my profile picture is from this gig. I chose it as I'm both a massive fan of Gallagher and Lynott/Lizzy. Unfortunately, I've never seen any video footage of this gig. I've only ever heard the audio. I'm guessing it was never shot on film or videotape. Rory mentioned this performance in an interview in May 1986 just before his performance at Self Aid in Dublin, five months after Lynott's death.

I was at this gig and seem to recall there being footage on the rte news later that night, so there might be footage somewhere.
It was in 82 BTW, I was sixteen at the time. " ah but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now "

Time for RTE to dig into their archives.
