how cool would be to see rory with status quo!
I watched as fear took the old men's gaze
Hopes of the young in troubled graves
'I see no day' I heard him say
So grey is the face of every mortal

I think John meant the band opener.

Rory and Quo were big friends.....Francis Rossi is always name checking Rory and always quotes,"On The Boards",as one of his favourite
albums of all time, have met him a couple of times and always makes time to chat about Rory and says what an influence he was to him,as indeed does Rick Parfitt..... they have not forgotten Rory.... :) :) :)

7/26/1974 Santa Monica USA Civic Auditorium with Status Quo/ Montrose-

Yeah- I was there. Funny, I know we saw Status Quo and Montrose, but I don't remember them at all.

My ex got tickets to see Rory and band the week or so before, then the show sold out. But a couple of days before the concert, Tim called and said his band had to play that night so we couldn't go, and could I sell the tickets? That didn't really set well with me, but I didn't want to go alone (back then I wouldn't go someplace like that by myself). But I still read Tim the riot act, because I was all set for it. And he said, "well, come see us play." "I don't wanna see you play, I see you guys ALL THE TIME. I want to see Rory." So I sold the tickets to a couple of friends. Then, the day of the concert, the bar where Tim's band was supposed to play cancelled on them. So we called the venue, and Santa Monica Civic had released additional tickets, so we got to go after all. And the seats we got were great- we were near the stage, slightly to the right, and in a section that was set on risers. Before Rory's band came on I saw the friends that I had sold the first set of tickets to, and they were situated in front of a support pillar (I swear I had no idea the seats were that bad). I remember, they saw us, too, and Mike came over, said rather sarcastically, "Thanks a lot, Cindy, for the great seats," and since we had all been smoking pot in our little corner of the venue, it just seemed hilarious.

I remember when Rory and band came out, his performance was amazing as always, and I remember trying to savor and remember every moment, but of course memories fade. And I remember seeing my friends Mike and Robert (the poor saps who bought our tickets and would have seen the back of a pillar if they'd stayed in their seats) up at the front by the stage, dancing with all the other guys that accumulated up there. And then I saw the bouncers shooing them away, and they danced away from the stage, down the isle, around to the other side of the stage and began dancing there instead. Rory was so loud, I swear I thought I could see the waves of the music flowing out of his amps.

And I remember eventually Mike and Robert were escorted, still dancing, out of the venue because they wouldn't leave the front of the stage. It was another Rory event that I wished could have gone on all night, we were all having so much fun.

7/26/1974 Santa Monica,CA USA Civic Auditorium with Status Quo/Montrose-

This was one I remember. I remember because we had tickets to go, and I was really looking forward to it. My friends had gotten the tickets as soon as they went on sale, but they themselves were in a band. A few days before the concert was to happen, my friends got hired at some bar, so they couldn't go, and back then I never went anywhere by myself, so that meant I couldn't go, so I sold the tickets to another couple of friends, Mike and Bob. I was not happy about selling them, but these two played guitar too, and they loved Rory's music. So, sadly I sold them the tickets.

But then the day of the concert, my friend Tim called and told me the gig that they were to play at was cancelled, and if he could get tickets did I still want to go? Dumb question. Of course I wanted to go, but the tickets were sold out for Rory. Luckily for us, at the last minute more tickets came on sale, and I mean the day of the concert. My friend had gotten the tickets to surprise me, since I was kinda mad about having to sell the first set and miss the show. So, we ended up going to see Rory after all, and they were great seats! They were on an upper level, above the floor, and we could look down from a riser off of the edge of the stage- excellent seats! I sat in the front row of that raised section right behind the railing. And right before Rory's band came out, I saw the friends I had sold the first set of tickets to, theirs were floor seats, and right behind a support pillar! Honestly, I had no way of knowing. I remember my friend Mike caught my eye and came over, said "Thanks for the great seats, Cindy!"

I just about fell out of my chair laughing, but honest, I did not know! No matter, Mike and Bob both left their seats, went up in front of the stage and danced the night away. Till the ushers finally threw them out for not taking their seats.

I remember watching Rory and his band and thinking really hard how I want to burn this show in to my memory and never forget it. Memories fade, but I still remember how happy I felt that evening, immersed in Rory's music.
