Rory in Eric Clapton & The Giants of Blues Guitar Magazine

Postby bottleneckblues77 » 12 Sep 2011, 00:06

This is just a minor small entry but in the Eric Clapton & The Giants of Blues Guitar "collector's issue" magazine, Rory is listed at #30 (on page 81) in the list of Top 50 Blues Anthems with "Pistol Slapper Blues" specifically the Live in Europe album. I've typed up the entry:

Every Rory Gallagher album has soul-stirring blues. Like Muddy Waters and B.B. King, Rory seemed to exhale music, dismantling once and for all the notion that white men can't sing the blues. For "Pistol Slapper Blues," Rory strapped on an acoustic guitar and did proud one of his heroes, Blind Boy Fuller. A tour-de-force.

The #1 entry for the list (really a blues-rock anthem list) was Crossroads as played by Cream, #2 was La Grange by ZZ Top, #3 was Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan, #4 Roadhouse Blues by The Doors and #5 was Red House by Jimi Hendrix (for those Leslie West fans Mississippi Queen was #6). Take it for what it is, but I was glad just to see Rory even recognized in a US list of any sort. I was, however, disgruntled that AC/DC's "The Jack" placed higher at #21 on a Blue's Anthem list.

Interesting, Guitar World used to pretty much ignore Rory, but in the last couple of years they've been singing his praises loudly and at times practically poetically! Since GW is in general a more rock 'n' metal oriented magazine, I take this editorial trend to indicate that they recognize that Rory is being discovered and embraced by a new, younger generation of guitarists, and that's great indeed.

Thanks for sharing, bottleneck!

Regards,
Richard
PS Glad to see my man Leslie West in the Top 10!

i only see a cover of that issue. but thanks a lot, it's good to see rory is getting recognition he deserve. although i'd put some other rory song on that list and of course he's no 1. on my blues list. i like the jack by ac/dc, i'm always saying that they've lost their blues feel after bon scott passed away
