Andy Kershaw - No Off Switch (An Autobiography)

Just thought I would share with you my Friday afternoon....
It was a fabulous Friday afternoon in the company of non other than ex BBC man 'Andy Kershaw'
He has just released an Autobiography and there is a whole chapter dedicated to Rory Gallagher - Chapter 8 - 'A Brutal Initiation - Rory, Live & Loud'

He has kindly given me permission to publish on my website the whole chapter in return for promoting his book, I am currently awaiting the PDF of the chapter, Once I have it I will let you know...

I thoroughly recommend the book, It's a fantastic read and he is one hell of a guy! to say 'been there done that' is an understatement...

That's a real treat, thanks for sharing it with us--I'll have to get the book. He remarks on something that many of us here have remarked on--the sheer volume of Rory gig was, well, remarkable. I'd been to many live shows by the time of my first Rory gig but was totally unprepared--I was sitting right up front, by the PA, too. It was a TOTAL assault on the senses--the lights, the tooth-shattering volume, the unbeLIEVable energy coming from Rory and the band, and the practically religious, ecstatic fervor of the fans. You felt like something dangerous was going on, like you were at the center of a bomb, but somehow with Rory at the wheel you were safe enough to just ride the missile.

Great memories for a Sunday night, or any other for that matter.

Good read so far, although my vivid memories of Rorys (1980/1?) Malvern Winter Gardens gig (aside from the vast quantities of sweat!) were that he flicked a number of plectrums into the crowd (I didn't get one), and he was reasonably amenable to people touching his arms, and even his guitar. My mate andy swears he even strummed the strings. I was OK with the volume as I'd seen ACDC and motorhead previously to that. How ever loud Rory may have got, those bands at that time were physically damaging - I couldn't hear properly for several days after ACDC. Some of my mates seem to have been permanently brain damaged too.

Just read the book and enjoyed it, Andy would'nt be one of my favorite presenters, but its well written with some very funny bits.
I searched out his interview with Rory and I think its class, Andy comes across as a bit of a twat, but Rory seems at his most natural.
Its short but sweet
